Daniel Cloud has worked in emerging markets since 1990. From 1990 to 1992, as an analyst with W. I. Carr, he covered companies in Thailand, Indonesia, and Hong Kong. In 1994, he co-founded Firebird Management, which established one of the first funds to invest in equities of the former Soviet Union. After leaving Firebird in 1998, he began working with Mark DeWeaver on the predecessor fund to Quantrarian Asia Hedge. He holds a PhD from Columbia University.
Mark DeWeaver worked as an analyst at W. I. Carr (Hong Kong) from 1991 to 1992 and later for Peregrine Brokerage, from 1993 to 1995. While at Peregrine, he established the company’s representative office in Shenzhen, China, analyzed 'B' share companies in the property and retail sectors, and wrote a monthly research note, 'Letter from China', that analyzed the China-based activities of Hong Kong-listed companies. From 1995 to 1998, he attended the University of Hawaii, where he received an East-West Center grant and was awarded a PhD in economics. He began working with Daniel in 1998.
